The intense winter weather we’ve had this year is one reason why it’s a good idea to be as prepared as possible for winter weather, especially when it’s not frequent. You don’t want to be caught unprepared and suffer through snow, ice, and potential power outages, as well as the damage they can do to your home. If you’re looking to move into one of the Atlanta metro new homes this year or have just moved in, here are some tips to winterize your home to prepare for future winter storms.

Plumbing is one of the main areas to focus on when winterizing your home, because it can cause some of the biggest bills and headaches if something goes wrong. A burst pipe can do significant damage and result in equally significant repair bills. Know where your main water shut off valve is in case of emergencies.

Ideally, you want to make sure your exposed pipes in unheated areas like the basement, attic, and crawl spaces are wrapped to keep them insulated and less likely to burst. Also for severe cold temperatures – especially for faucets and showers located along exterior walls – let warm water drip overnight to further try to avoid frozen pipes.

You should also disconnect exterior garden hoses and make sure they’re drained. You may want to consider installing insulated covers on the spigots, as well. Inside your home, open cabinets under sinks in the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room to help warm air get in to avoid freezing, especially if the power goes out.

For your HVAC system, make sure your system is running efficiently with regular maintenance and inspections, especially at the start of a new season. You should also keep up to date replacing filters for cleaner air and better heating efficiency. If you have ceiling fans, you can set them to rotate clockwise on a low speed to push warm air down where it’s needed. If you notice any drafts around doors and windows, use caulk and weather stripping to help seal them.

Other winterizing tips include making sure your gutters are clear after the autumn leaves have fallen so that you don’t end up with ice dams that can cause water damage to your home. Make sure your fire and carbon monoxide alarms are in working order, and keep batteries, flashlights, candles, and other emergency items stocked and in working order.

A little planning goes a long way in helping you make it safely through a winter storm. Even if you’re just planning for regular winter weather, many of these winterizing tips will keep your Atlanta metro new homes safe and comfortable throughout the season.
