Kennesaw, with a population of roughly 33,036 in 2020, is a 9.5 square mile suburban city northwest of Atlanta in Cobb County, GA. Founded in the late 1830’s as a shanty town for workers building the Western and Atlantic railroads to reside, this town has been called by many names (most notably, “Big Shanty”), before settling on the moniker ‘Kennesaw’ in 1887. Being home to both the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, and the Kennesaw Mountain itself – located southeast of the city limits in Battlefield Park, this town has plenty of history to discover and explore.
This town’s historical appeal is not the only beneficial thing it has to offer; U.S. Route 41 and State Route 3 pass through Kennesaw as Cobb Parkway, allowing residents easy access to travel outside of city and state limits for work, family or fun. Access to I-75 is available through exits 269, 271, and 273, putting Kennesaw residents 27 miles from the city of Atlanta if travelling southeast, and 94 miles from Chattanooga if travelling northwest.
Within Kennesaw, there are plenty of fun things for locals and visitors to do. To explore some of Kennesaw’s natural beauty, pay a visit to Kennesaw Mountain in the National Battlefield Park , the Smith Gilbert Gardens, or the Swift-Cantrell Park! For some more observational and educational activities, visit The Zuckerman Museum of Art or The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History. A variety of outdoor games and sports can be started, seen and joined over at Big Shanty Park, Noonday Park, and the Kennesaw Skate Park! Additional town features include the Town Center at Cobb, the Marietta Country Club, and the annual Big Shanty Festival in April!
Kennesaw is a part of the Cobb County School District, providing excellent public schooling for all grade levels. For families interested in private schooling, there are a multitude of private schooling options in and outside of Kennesaw that are still within close proximity to residents. For further education beyond high school, Kennesaw State University is a great and easily accessible option for quality undergraduate and graduate-level education.
